How to maximize your 220-character LinkedIn headline

LinkedIn made a big change to profile headlines recently that you will want to take advantage of -- they increased the maximum length of your headline from 120 characters to 220 characters -- this means that you have a full additional 100 characters, including spaces to tell your story.

To change your profile headline, click the pencil at the top of your profile.

If you are in job search mode, include the exact job titles that you want, plus the industries that you are experienced in, as well as areas of expertise that you want to emphasize. For example, you could write ...

Vice President of Marketing, Global Marketing Director - Brand Communications, Strategic Partnerships B2C/B2B expertise in Retail, Experiential/Entertainment, Premium Brands, Healthcare, Pharmacy, Wellness, & Franchising


Note that I used REAL job titles, not "leader" or "professional" -- no one is looking for those wishy-washy titles.

To attract business to your organization, use your headline to promote what you do and what your company does like for this business owner:

Franchise Sales/Development Advisor/Consultant Helping you select the RIGHT franchise before you buy the WRONG one. Call me for Franchise Selection, Coaching, Buying, Selling - Veterans, Women, Minority-Owned Franchising

To represent your company best, promote both what you AND what your company does, like this:

Strategic Account Executive / National Account Manager / Sales Representative -- Develops New Business, Exceeds Sales, Manages Contracts -- Elevating the health of healthcare while making it affordable for all

Bottom line: Use the increased character maximum in your LinkedIn headline to tell your story, score high for jobs, and sell your products or services.
