This tip involves using LinkedIn, so if you aren’t registered on this free business networking site, establish a profile right away. Then invite your friends, former colleagues and classmates to connect with you there. The more LinkedIn connections you have, the greater access you will have to an extended network of your first degree connections and all of their first and second degree connections (some of whom may work at your target companies). Why having lots of connections is important.
Once you are on LinkedIn and have established connections, click the Advanced link next to the Search People box to try to learn the hiring manager's name. Put the organization's name in the Company box and the job title you think you would report to in the Title box. If the company has multiple locations, put your local zip code in the Postal Code box. Search through the results to find the person with the leadership title you seek.
For example, if you are seeking a financial analyst position, type "director financial analysis", "CFO", or "controller" one at a time into the box to see if you can find the right person in the search results.

Another way to find the right person is to type the organization's name in the Search Company box. If the organization has a LinkedIn company page, find the "How You Are Connected” box on the right navigation bar of the company page and click the See all link to view 10 pages of search results of employees who are on LinkedIn. Type the various possible hiring manager titles into the search box (in the upper left corner) and click the magnifying glass icon.
Click See all to see all of the company employees in your extended network. |

Then what?
I explain what do once you have the person’s name and title in this article.
The bottom line: Learn the hiring manager's name and contact information -- doing so will improve your job chances! -- Kathy
