Do you feel trapped in an unfulfilling career? While most people are willing to earn less money if it means doing more meaningful work, making the leap can be completely intimidating. Pursuing your passion likely means getting out of your comfort zone, learning new skills, and taking financial risks.
Fortunately, it’s a lot easier to overcome these challenges and put in the work when you’re chasing a passion. Nothing will stop you from achieving success when you’re doing something you truly love. As with almost everything in life, those first few steps are the hardest. WiserU is here to help you overcome them!
Launch a Business
Starting a business is a great way to turn a passion into a
job. But what if you don’t know your passion yet? Home Business Magazine
suggests creating a passion list to determine what inspires and
motivates you. This will help you discover creative ways to combine your skills
and passions to create unique business ideas that haven’t been done before.
Like all first-time entrepreneurs, you’re bound to have a lot of questions about the startup process. What is a business plan? How do I pay business taxes? What legal structure is best for my business? There are plenty of resources online that can help you answer questions like these.
Advance Your Skills
Chances are, you will need some new skills to complete your
career change. Investigate educational opportunities that can help you learn
the skills you need for your dream role. If you need specific certifications
for your new career, go back to school and earn those credentials
while you’re still working your current job.
If you need to learn new skills for your business—web development, grant writing, graphic design, project management, marketing, consulting, etc.—take advantage of free online courses, YouTube videos, informational blogs, and online forums to learn what you need to know.
Map Out Your Action Plan
Achieving your dream career won’t happen overnight. You will have to work hard to get there, likely doing things you don’t necessarily like at first until you reach your long-term goals. A career action plan can help you stay focused and motivated along the way. Corporate Finance Institute suggests starting by defining your short-term and long-term career goals. For example, if you want to be the manager of a marketing agency one day, some short-term goals might include completing a marketing course and gaining experience by working in marketing.
Create Work-Life Balance
Pursuing a passion does not protect you from burnout. Any job, even one that you love, can be draining after a while. In fact, it can be easier to overwork yourself when you’re working in a field that excites you. Remember to slow down and find time for balance. Spend time on things other than work, like hobbies or family activities. Shut down your work early enough to get a full night’s sleep. Exercise regularly to combat work-related stress. Maintaining a sense of harmony between your work and your personal life will make your job feel much more fulfilling!
Whether you know exactly what you want to do with your life or you’re still exploring your options, don’t settle for a job that leaves you feeling depleted and unfulfilled. As cliché as it sounds, it’s important to chase your dreams! Follow your interests, skills, and talents, and you’ll wind up in a career that feels truly meaningful to you.
