To those who’ve been fired, 10 truths to remember, plus 3 quick tips to help you overcome unemployment

be strategic in your job search, improving your job search, job seeker truths
Discouragement is to be expected
during a prolonged job search.
How do you chose to respond?
A person I care about was fired from his job recently which made the reality of unemployment all the more real to me. It also reminded me that each worker who is let go is not a statistic, but a person with real feelings and fears.

I've been unemployed in the past and still remember how it felt to be told to go away. It hurts. And the worry you can feel about how you will support yourself and your family can be terrifying.

To all those who are unemployed, I share 10 truths (I’ve shared them before, but they bear repeating):

10 truths to tell yourself when prolonged unemployment gets you down:

Truths

  1. Just because you lost your last job doesn't mean you won’t get a job.
  2. Just because you had a bad boss doesn't mean the next one will be bad.
  3. Being let go doesn't mean you were a bad employee.
  4. Just because you are weak in certain areas doesn't mean you must stay weak. You can improve if you put your mind to it and work hard.
  5. Just because you didn't get hired for one job doesn't mean you weren't qualified or that you won’t get an even better one.
  6. Just because the phone didn't ring this week doesn't mean it won’t ring next week.
  7. No job is perfect … not the last one you had … not the one you really wanted (but didn't get), and certainly not the one you will eventually land.
  8. People who care about you don’t judge you for being unemployed. They want you to be happy.
  9. You are not your position. You are so much more than a title and can accomplish substantially more than is written on a job description.
  10. There is a good job out there for you. Keep trying. Keep praying and believe in yourself.

If you are suffering through a prolonged unemployment, keep 3 things in mind:

1) People who care about you want to help, so ask them. I care and I’ll help you as best I can.

2) There are resources available to help you, so seek them. Your state or province offers services to help unemployed people. Even if you do not qualify to collect unemployment, you may be able to benefit from other resources that the government offers, such as training classes, access to computers and job listings. Many churches or other places of worship, as well as nonprofit organizations offer workshops, job listings, and other resources for free or at a very low cost. Seek out and take advantage of all the resources that are available.

3) Your network can connect you to opportunities, so build your network. Now is NOT the time to crawl into your cocoon. Build your network by joining and participating in LinkedIn groups and then inviting people you interact with in the group to connect. Invite friends and former coworkers to connect on LinkedIn, attend local networking and professional organizations, and conduct informational interviews with movers and shakers in your field. More networking ideas.
