How to learn if employees hate their company before you apply

Want to find out if current staffers despise their company before you submit your resume for an open position? 

You can often learn what employees think (good or bad) through three excellent online sources. Learning this information can keep you from making a wrong career decision. 

Here's how to learn the scoop on hiring companies:

Visit Glassdoor.com.
  • Click the triangle next to the Search box and select “Companies”.
  • Type the company name in the Company box and your city (if relevant) in the Location box.
  • Click “Search”
  • When the page opens, click “Reviews”

Learn what employees think about their company on Glassdoor.com.

As an example, if you search “Enterprise Rent-A-Car”, you will see that overall, employees say the company is “OK” (2.9 out of 5 stars). A company ratings distribution section lets you drill down to see if employees are very satisfied, satisfied, neutral (OK), dissatisfied, or very dissatisfied with their company.


Another category allows you to see employee ratings about their company’s career opportunities, compensation and benefits, work/life balance, and other factors.


Best of all, the site allows you to see written reviews from employees. Such comments can give you a clear sense as to whether a company is right for you.

Seek to find out employee opinions in other ways, such as by asking people within the company or by typing the company’s name and “employee reviews” in the search bar of your favorite search engine.
